The Marlborough Wine Festival | |
| The Marlborough Wine Festival is New Zealand’s premier wine and food affair. It is a summer event, which takes place during the second weekend of February. It is the longest running wine festival in New Zealand. Blenheim plays host to the Marlborough Wine Festival, at Montana’s Brancott Winery. Marlborough can well be called the wine growing capital of New Zealand and Blenheim is a town situated at its heart. | |
Held in tented show grounds, the festival showcases highly acclaimed wines of the region. The Wine Marlborough Festival is an excellent opportunity for wine lovers to experience three days of sampling new releases, tours and one of kind meals with famous wine makers, all within the back drop of the beautiful Marlborough wine growing region.
It is quiet unlikely that the first growers of grapes in Marlborough, in the 1970s, might have foreseen the extent of growth and fame the region’s wine industry would attain. The flavors of the Marlborough wines captured not only the imagination of the country’s wine makers but also the attention of international wine commentators and consumers and sparked an unparalleled boom in vineyard development. When The Marlborough Wine Festival began back in 1984, the region was home to a handful of wineries. 25 years later Marlborough boasts of at least 45 cellar doors. It now produces over a hundred different labels.
Every summer, the wine lands around Blenheim open their doors to the public for tutored tasting, gourmet cooking and lively jazz. The festival spreads out over the weekend for a three day spectacular of culinary and vinous excellence. Top chefs of the region compete to create the year’s ‘Signature Dish’ in a theater style cooking arena where the visitors can drop by to watch them. More than 40 wineries present wine tasting and workshops led by wine makers. The visitors take trips along the wine trails to visit some of the local vineyards. All this is accompanied by live jazz and celebrity performances.
To reach Blenheim by train the TranzCoastal is a good option. Flights serviced by Air New Zealand reaches Blenheim airport from Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. The other nearest airport is Picton airport. If you are planning to use the roadways, the state highway 1 runs from Picton south to Blenheim and the state highway 6 connects Nelson to Blenheim.
